As part of Newbiggin by the Sea Art Trail there are a number of miniature sculptures hidden along the seafront and in the Old Ship. Their story is told below.
It was a dark and dangerous night to be out on the open sea. The rain lashed down and the wind howled through the rigging as the ship, Denjack, hurtled along, tossed and buffeted by the raging storm. The waves dipped and drew the ship down and then rose and spat it forward.
The tiny crew of the Denjack had faced many dangers since, in fear for their lives, they had been forced to leave their own country, Callumnia, after the invasion of the dreaded Harridans. As they journeyed in search of a new home they had narrowly missed being wrecked on the jagged rocks that protected the entrance to the city of Daledane. Then they had been forced to fight off the gigantic sea monsters that guarded the port of Nanpam.
Now they were being driven along by this violent gale that had arrived without warning. Blown by the tempest beyond the seas they knew, Captain Michaelus Carokith and First Mate Markan clung grimly to the ship’s wheel although in actual fact they were totally unable to steer. They had no choice but to go where the storm blew them.
Gazing ahead, searching the darkness for any sign of land, they were horrified when, directly in front of them there appeared two giants, a man and a woman. Terrified, the two men stared at the giant couple as the relentless wind drove them on. As they approached, however, they saw the giants were smiling and pointing to a huge gateway beside them. With no choice about where they went , the Captain and First Mate let go of the wheel and waited to find out what would befall them once they passed through.
Once beyond the gateway they found themselves suddenly in quiet waters. Captain Carokith noticed two lights shining in the distance and ordered the tired crew to make towards them. As they landed a smiling man and woman appeared from between the lights and came running up to greet them. They offered them shelter after their long, hard journey. Inside, where they were welcomed by many friendly people, they gave them food and drink and asked to hear their story. The sailors sat in the warmth and felt the friendliness of the people of this new land which had the protection of the giants. They felt safe and decided to make this their new home. And there they stayed forever.
Even today you will see their images, created by the wise man, Vintala, in this safe haven. Some can be found in the safety of The Old Ship and others can be found along the seafront. How many can you find?
Aroll, the storyteller.
