NE64 A FIELD FOR NEWBIGGIN
Over 300 residents of and visitors to Newbiggin helped create this community sculpture during the summer of 2008. Adapted from the Antony Gormley installation 'Field' participants were guided by KEAP over a series of eight workshops to produce and decorate a ceramic coble, coalmine or bay. Over 300 pieces were completed and assembled to create a sculpture measuring 8 feet square which reflects the history, heritage and culture of Newbiggin. The piece is currently on display in the quadrangle at Newbiggin Sports and Community Centre
The aim of this project was to engage with our local community in producing a piece of artwork about Newbiggin and to give residents a sense of ownership and pride in the artistic developments taking place in the village. 'NE64 A Field for Newbiggin' will feature in the next edition of the Art Trail Leaflet.
MARINE PANELS (WINDSOR FIRST SCHOOL)
KEAP worked with the staff and children of Windsor First School Newbiggin in the production of two ceramic panels depicting marine life. Every child in the school produced a tile for the finished piece. The panels, each four foot square are now on display on the outside wall of the school and can be seen on entering Newbiggin from North Seaton.
This project engaged very young children in the production of a permanent piece of art for their school and encouraged them to take an interest and pride in other artworks both in their village and beyond. KEAP are committed to supporting the next generation of artists and art lovers.
TOTEMS
Two ceramic sculptures containing symbolic images of Newbiggin placed in flowerbeds at Robinson Square and Gibson Street. The aim of these pieces was to enhance the environment, to contribute to the Art Trail, to provide visitor interest and to stimulate an awareness of and pride in the local community.
